Morris County Elevator — commercial elevator service in New Jersey

Storm preparation

Storm prep for your elevator.

Severe storms have damaged a lot of New Jersey buildings over the past decade. A short checklist and one phone call before the weather hits will save you significant repair costs after.

Why this matters

Over the past few years, severe storms have damaged many homes and commercial properties. We've all learned the expensive lesson — be prepared for bad weather.

Morris County Elevator has a few suggestions to help prevent a problem before it starts, and we want to remind you we're here if you need our help.

Pre-storm checklist

Walk through this before any major weather event.

Educate your tenants and staff on what to do. Print this out and post it in the machine room.

  • 01 Have your elevator company's emergency phone number on hand. Ours is 973-252-1700.
  • 02 Inspect elevator machine room ventilation openings, windows, and doors for possible rain leakage.
  • 03 Close all vents and openings at the top of the hoistway to prevent water from entering the elevator shaft.
  • 04 Move elevator cars off the ground floor — middle floors or higher.
  • 05 Disconnect all power to the elevators.
  • 06 Have an electrician check your emergency lighting and surge protection for when the power comes back on.
  • 07 Check for water damage before restarting the elevators. Strongly recommended: have one of our technicians inspect your equipment before restarting it.

Before the storm

Call us first.

The best move is to call us before the storm so we can help you put an emergency plan in place.

FEMA + NFIP guidance

National Flood Insurance Program

The NFIP regulations require that elevators and their associated equipment be protected from flood damage. The best way to do this is to locate mechanical equipment associated with the elevator above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE).

NFIP flood insurance coverage is limited for elevator equipment: new or replacement equipment installed on or after October 1, 1987 and located below the lowest floor of an elevated building or in a basement is not covered.
